STC Emphasizes Commitment to Guidelines for Synthetic Turf Performance

Atlanta, GA, March 23, 2016 – The Synthetic Turf Council is dedicated to serving as a resource for trustworthy information about synthetic turf. Our objective is to encourage, promote, and facilitate better understanding among all parties involved in the maintenance, selection, delivery and use of today’s synthetic turf systems. To that end, we make every attempt to dispense information that is neutral, objective, and validated by independent current and credible research.

It is with this background that our Guidelines for Synthetic Turf Performance were crafted. With careful consideration and vetting from industry professionals, these guidelines identify several components that should be considered when selecting a synthetic turf system. The testing standards for each component - including fiber - are compiled from widely accepted ASTM or FIFA/EN methods.

The STC highly cautions any end-user against basing their specification or selection criteria on a single component or one that utilizes testing methods not recognized by nationally accepted, peer-reviewed standards adopted by the synthetic turf industry. Without these safeguards, test criteria that cannot be replicated in independent settings around the world are considered to be subjective.

In Memoriam: Ron Van Gelderen

In Memoriam: Ron Van Gelderen

Ron Van Gelderen passed away on February 19, 2016 at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City Utah with his daughter by his side. His Parkinson's disease was advancing rapidly and he had contracted several other health issues over the last several weeks. His desire was for his body to be donated to research at the University. There are no plans at this time for any type of services. Ron was 80 years old.

Before serving as the STC's first president from 2003 until 2006, Ron held a 20-year position as president of the Carpet and Rug Institute in Dalton, Georgia.

The STC issued the following statement:

“Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to Ron Van Gelderen’s family. He was a great warrior of his own disease and a caring smart and loyal friend to many of us. Ron was a steady and firm leader in an industry full of personalities and corporate politics when the STC was first formed. He earned a reputation for being a leader as the president of the Carpet and Rug Institute.

“When several key members of the turf industry came together to create the Synthetic Turf Council, STC, Ron was the perfect choice to lead. Ron’s calm and straightforward approach to the issues and opportunities facing the industry were presented in a manner that helped make this organization a success. The ability to unite competitors for the betterment of the synthetic turf industry was no easy challenge. Ron was always the first with a smile and a firm handshake; he was a gentle man who had the respect of the STC members and the town he called home.

“He loved to get up early and catch the sun rising over the city; he appreciated his family, his friends and was passionate about the things he believed in. Ron believed in the STC and its mission. We are a better organization today due in part to the example he set for us.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – While efforts ranging from Let’s Move to the CDC’s new Childhood Obesity Demonstration Project urge youth to play outside to promote fitness, often kids don’t have a place to go. That is changing today for Stuart-Hobson Middle School in Washington, D.C., the recipient of a new synthetic playing field from the Synthetic Turf Council, a non-profit trade association. Representing the first industry-wide collaboration of its kind, the initiative showcases how private industry can make a difference in the drive for increased childhood fitness.

"We are committed to community wellness and environmental responsibility through the use of synthetic turf,” noted Rick Doyle, President of the Synthetic Turf Council. "Our members enthusiastically came together to build a field that increases opportunities for Stuart-Hobson students to be active and play outside.”

Despite its academic excellence, Stuart-Hobson Middle School had an asphalt playground that limited the ability of students to play team sports and increase their fitness levels. Unveiled during a "ribbon-breaking” ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on October 11, the new 13,200 sq ft, beautiful, safe, grass-like synthetic turf playing surface can be used by students year-round, even in the rain.

"Although Stuart-Hobson has an incredible athletic program, we’ve lacked outside practice fields for our players,” said Principal Dawn Clemens. "This new synthetic turf field will help all of our students increase their physical activity levels.”

In reporting that about 17% of children and adolescents are obese, the Centers for Disease Control notes that the lack of safe, appealing places for kids to play or be active is a major problem in many communities. A rapidly growing solution to this problem is synthetic turf, installed by over 6,000 schools and community parks in the U.S. and Canada in places where it is difficult or impossible to grow natural grass. Eco-friendly benefits include the conservation of more than six billion gallons of water annually and elimination of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. Creating more outdoor play spaces and athletic fields enhances the well-being of young and old Americans alike.

About the Synthetic Turf Council

Based in Atlanta, the Synthetic Turf Council was founded in 2003 to promote the industry and to assist buyers and end users with the selection, use and maintenance of synthetic turf systems in sports field, golf, municipal parks, airports, landscape and residential applications. The organization is also a resource for current, credible, and independent research on the safety and environmental impact of synthetic turf. Membership includes builders, landscape architects, testing labs, maintenance providers, manufacturers, suppliers, installation contractors, infill material suppliers and other specialty service companies.
