City of Refuge Wins Community Park Category in STC’s 2012 Search for the Real Field of Dreams

 ATLANTA, GA – Since 1997, the City of Refuge in downtown
Atlanta has offered both life-saving resources and life building tools to
individuals and families who have been living on the margin. The organization
has programs that span multiple areas of need from food, clothing, and shelter,
to job training, placement, housing, life skills, and transportation. As the
Grand Prize Winner in the Community Park Category for the Search for the Field
of Dreams, the children and families at the City of Refuge now have two brand
new synthetic turf play areas. The
national contest, conducted by the Synthetic Turf Council (STC),
searched the country for the community park or school with the most compelling
story behind its synthetic turf field or play area.
In an area of Atlanta where it is virtually impossible to
play outside in a safe and secure environment, the City of Refuge through many generous
sponsors including Synthetic Turf International, The Arthur Blank Foundation
and the Peachtree Road United Methodist’s Women’s Association, was able to have
two synthetic turf play areas installed in April of this year that accommodate children
of all ages. The play areas are housed
in a giant warehouse which is part of the 110,000 square-foot campus.
"The families and children of the City of Refuge are now
able to enjoy green grass every day allowing the children to stay active and
experience something that has been rare in their lives,” said Bruce Deel, CEO,
City of Refuge. "Overall, this has been a great experience for all parties
involved and the main part is that the lives of these families and children
will be changed for the better.”
Other Real Field of Dreams winners include Top Winner Piqua
High School in Piqua, OH, Athenia Steel Recreation in Clifton, NJ. The National Finalist winners included Hermleigh
High School in Hermleigh, TX and Hattie Larlham Doggie Day Care & Boarding
in North Canton, OH. About the Synthetic Turf Council
