2018 Sports Project Award:
Portland Sports Complex, Hellas built four softball fields with Matrix® Turf with Helix Technology in camel and green color, with the Portland logo. Tick markings were also added in the outfield for soccer. Hellas also installed the dugouts, benches, and fencing. In addition, the football field was built using Hellas Matrix Turf with Helix Technology with two-tone green alternating panel colors with blue turf and the Portland logo in the end zones. Geo Plus organic infill was selected for all the fields, due to the cooling properties. Geo Plus is a Hellas exclusive product made of cork and coconut fibers and can be recycled or composted at the end of the field’s life. Temperatures in Portland can get very hot during the summer and the Geo Plus infill will keep the turf up to 40 degrees cooler versus the higher temperature of a synthetic turf field that uses black crumb rubber. A Cushdrain® pad or elastic layer was installed underneath the turf on the football field. This paved-in-place elastic layer will not only improve the softness of the field, reducing concussions, but it will also maintain the planarity of the field and allow for rapid drainage in extreme weather. Hellas also built a multi-purpose field with Matrix Turf with Helix Technology. Additional amenities included was a sound system, a concession/restroom building, covered picnic tables, sports field lighting, bleachers, batting cages, covered playground, fencing, splash pad, parking lot, signs, scoreboards and maintenance building. Bright and cheerful colored awnings and splashes of blue and green reflect the City of Portland’s colors throughout the complex, aligning with the branding of the city.
Portland Municipal Park Hellas built five baseball fields with Hellas Matrix Turf with Helix Technology in camel and green color showcasing the City of Portland logo. All the fields have Geo Plus organic infill. In addition, Hellas built a pavilion with an indoor/outdoor basketball court and attached concession/restroom building, a pavilion with picnic tables, fitness stations, jog trail, splash pad, and covered playground with Kickabout® play surface, sound system, fencing, bleachers, batting cages, splash pad, shade structures, picnic tables and grills, sports field lighting, a maintenance building, sidewalks, parking lot, entrance signage, and scoreboards. Like the Sports Complex, the City of Portland colors of blue and green were continued throughout the municipal park.
The City of Portland project is the biggest organic infill project in the country. It was completely customized by the city to fit the community’s needs and desires. Each facility is one of a kind in design and layout, and completely designed by the Hellas Design Build Team. The two facilities together are considered the best sports facilities in South Texas based on location, size, use of space, and materials. The facilities are bringing the community together through sports. Both young and elderly members of the community can gather to exercise and stay healthy or participate and watch sports that appeal to all, including basketball, baseball, football, and soccer. Kids will have the opportunity to participate in more activities to help them develop skills, exercise, and be a part of a team. It’s quality time, in a safe, clean, and friendly environment. The facilities create a sense of pride and excitement in the community. The use of environmentally-friendly Geo Plus Infill and Matrix Turf conserves precious resources, while keeping maintenance costs low. The city will be able to host tournaments, camps, and other events, along with more league play than ever before. The complexes are expected to bring in more visitors every year and also generate revenue for businesses in and around the City of Portland.
Quote from: Matt Rogers, City of Portland Sports Director:
“This year, residents of Portland invested over $17,000,000 to construct two new sports venues for our kids. We are extremely pleased with the results. Not only do our kids have premiere facilities to play and grow on, sports tourism is bringing tournament teams from all over Texas to our community to use our facilities. Our business community is benefitting from an influx of teams and their families using our restaurants, hotels and other local retailers. Our new venues may well be the best investment we have ever made. Both our kids and our community will reap the benefits for generations to come."
"Economic development is certainly an important component to this. We've got 22 baseball and softball tournaments scheduled between the two sports complexes between now and the end of July."
