2019 Landscape Installation of the Year Award: Residential Category

Suze Orman's Vacation Home by SYNLawn

SYNLawn custom designed and meticulously installed 7,000 square feet at Suze’s private island vacation home in the Bahama Islands. The landscape had many undulations and was a unique shape requiring meticulous attention to detail in turf positioning, cutting and seaming the turf and working with known environmental hazards such as high-efficiency reflective windows and known drainage issues during torrential rains.

Limestone was used as underlayment because it is readily available in Miami and commonly used as a stone base for turf and paver systems due to its drain ability and ability to be compacted to a 90% proctor (firmness rating). This is the preferred underlayment material in this particular part of the US given the climate for drainage from the frequency of severely heavy rains.

One of the most challenging in these endeavors was getting this critical underlayment to the location. First from Miami where the limestone base rock had to be placed in super sacks, then transported to the barge docks and then loaded onto a barge along with the rolls of turf and infill sand. When the barge got to Suze’s Island, the materials were taken to the customs yard, cleared by customs, and then hauled to Suze’s house. An island backhoe was commandeered for this operation. Once materials were on site, they were then wheelbarrowed into position where installation took place. In order to maximize their efforts, the crew worked tirelessly whenever there was any sunlight.

One of the most impressive feats of this project was this small crew, living and sleeping on the island during the job, finished this massive job 2 weeks ahead of schedule in an extremely hot climate without the traditional comforts and equipment a similar job would have at their disposal stateside.

In order to maximize their efforts, the crew worked tirelessly whenever there was any sunlight. Balancing unique logistics such as being off-site with limited access to supplies, properly containing international shipments involving customs, an exorbitant amount of paperwork that continually needed to be updated, importing 67 tons of limestone for underlayment, hauling of tools & special materials from boat dock to residence expeditiously, coordination of crew & diligent work. This detailed coordination of tools, materials, & crew were paramount in executing a successful and timely result.

Suze Orman the world’s recognized personal finance guru sought out SYNLawn for a custom designed and meticulously installed multi-product 7,000 square ft installation at her home on a small private island community in the Bahamas accessible only by boat and small water-landing-capable aircraft.

The remote island location made this residential project extremely unique from a logistics and installation standpoint. Invoking scenes from planes, trains and automobiles, the crews, material and equipment were transported via barge, container and commuter plane to this tiny island respite.

Another unique aspect of this residential project that deserves recognition is that it was an international installation, customs provided another layer of complexity. All materials had to be shipped via container to the Bahamas with a 4-man crew charged with transport and installation duties under the hot Caribbean sun.

We think Suze Orman, Forbes magazine “one or the Most Influential Women in Media” and 61st in World’s Most Powerful Women, said it best, "I just returned to my Bahama Island Home and was over the moon when I saw my new SYNLawn installed backyard - I have to tell you I was so impressed it was not even funny. It looks so real is so soft to walk on, has no odor at all and does not get that hot. Incredible! The SYNLawn crew finished the job way ahead of schedule which has never happened on any other project I have done. I will recover the cost of this project in no time, for we are saving a ton of money on water, fertilizer, insecticide, fungicide, labor to mow and edge, etc. etc. Another upside is that our pool is staying so clean for there is no dirt that blows in it anymore when the winds blow. My only regret is that I waited so long to do it. You are all APPROVED to go and check this grass out. I have to tell you SYNLawn is the only company I would use, the best of the best, and for me to say that is a big, big, big deal."

Suze Orman’s project is a prime example of how we take care of our clients and promote the synthetic turf industry. SYNLawn exemplified extreme conscientious care and is ecstatic over the results achieved at this unique residence.
