2019 Landscape Installation of the Year Award: Specialty Category

ForeverLawn, Inc. – West Hollywood Dog Park

The West Hollywood Dog Park, located at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., is a community dog park with a true focus on community. Residents of the city, which is locally known as WeHo, came together to voice their desire for a safe, clean, attractive park where they could bring their dogs for off-leash exercise and play. Their intensive community involvement, which spanned over four years, resulted in a park consisting of two enclosed areas, one for small dogs (4,250 square feet), and one for large dogs (7,350 square feet). In a city where dogs are far more common than children (400 children live in WeHo, and 30,400 adult residents have dogs), the dog park was an essential resource, and one that residents were more than happy to pay for out of their tax dollars. When the dog park opened in January 2018, WeHo Mayor John Heilman was on hand to host the ceremonies and cut the ribbon.

  • The city of West Hollywood chose synthetic grass for their new dog park for the following reasons:
  • An all-weather product, synthetic grass allows the park to remain open year-round in any weather, and will not become muddy like natural grass and other surfaces the city was considering. Another nearby dog park uses mulch for the surface, and community members have complained about it being dirty and unsanitary.
  • With antimicrobial agents built into the blades, the synthetic grass offers a cleaner, safer, better smelling environment for pets and their owners.
  • The short, dense blade construction of the synthetic turf simplifies the identification and removal of solid pet waste.
  • Liquid waste drains through the synthetic turf quickly due to the knitted construction designed for superior drainage.
  • Since the product chosen was an infill-free solution, pet waste would not become trapped in the grass, and power washing techniques could be used to clean it.
  • The ultra-durable construction of the synthetic grass provides a long-lasting, safe surface that can withstand the heavy traffic of a city park.
  • The beautiful, green, grassy surface provides an attractive appearance for the park that far exceeds common dog park surfaces such as dirt, gravel, concrete, or mulch.

The design of the park includes mounds and terraces to give the dogs an interesting and challenging place to play and exercise. The use of synthetic turf allows for these unique surface features that would not be possible if a loose fill surface such as mulch had been used. Other valuable features of the park include lights inset into the ground, which enhance safety at night and create a beautiful appearance for the park, secure fencing with double gates to keep dogs safe, comfortable and attractive seating for dog owners, and live plants and shade trees that help create an inviting, comfortable environment.
